    In 2017 “accidental poisonings” became the number one cause of accidental deaths in America. This really meant drug overdose deaths. Many assumed this was due to prescription opioids, but in reality it was due to more potent forms of fentanyl coming into America. At the Walker Center we have developed a successful multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. I will discuss how we use neuroscience, a multi-disciplinary approach, and medications to support successful outcomes.

    The ICADD Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to present Calvin D. Armerding, MA, LPC-S, as a keynote speaker for the 40th Annual Idaho Conference on Alcohol and Drug Dependency.

    Calvin Armerding, MA, LPC-S is a Senior Associate at Travelers Rest Counseling Associates, where he works with adults, couples, and families. Calvin is the author of The Cooperative Family (Henosis Press, 2021) and co-creator of The Telos Project, a web-based self-help program. He serves as President of the South Carolina Society of Adlerian Psychology, and is co-founder of The Alfred Adler Fellows Program, a postgraduate training in Adlerian psychology. Calvin also enjoys spending time with his children, studying architecture, and creating music in his spare time.

    This keynote presentation explores the essential principles of equality and mutual respect within the therapeutic relationship, drawing from the theories of Alfred Adler. It examines the dynamics of power differentials between therapist and client, highlighting how these imbalances can hinder or facilitate therapeutic progress. Particular focus is given to the concept of unreasonable entitlements, judgments, “pet theories,” and ego-driven expertise, as well as their potential to disrupt the collaborative nature of therapy. Attendees will gain insights into fostering an egalitarian relationship that respects the dignity and agency of clients, emphasizing the ethical responsibility of therapists to maintain balance and equity in their
    professional interactions.

    Less than half of all U.S. substance use disorder treatment facilities offer tobacco cessation services.

    Tobacco cessation is associated with improved SUD treatment outcomes. Tobacco cessation can have mental health benefits.
    Quitting smoking has synergistic benefits for SUD clients, increasing their sense of mastery and helping them focus on a positive lifestyle.

    Burnout affects millions of Americans each year and has been called “the disease of our civilization.” The unhappiness and detachment burnout causes can threaten your job, your relationships, and your health. But there’s good news -- burnout can be healed.

    Former 20-year elected District Attorney, Mark Yarbrough, personally experienced burnout, learned how to successfully overcome it, and went from “Burnout” to “On Fire!” He has since become a “burnout expert” and has written and published on the subject.

    Audience members will learn the definition of Burnout and the symptoms thereof. But more importantly, attendees will be laughing, and at the same time learning how to apply Mark’s F.I.N.G.E.R. philosophy to help themselves or their co-workers avoid and/or recover from Burnout.
